Flax lilies are clumping evergreen perennials with grassy, strap-like foliage that vary in color, width, and height. Native to Australia and New Zealand, Dianella are mostly drought tolerant and generally need some degree of shade. Full sun in foggy coastal areas. Dianella tasmanica ‘Variegata’ has green leaves with creamy white stripes. The small star-shaped flowers of pale blue-violet appear in mid spring followed by attractive dark blue berries. Some drought tolerance, but better with occasional to regular irrigation. Great plant for dry shade. Use as an accent in woodland gardens or plant as a border.
